Tony Cragg im Skulpturengarten spanischer Turm in Darmstadt 26.04 – 26.10.2025<\/h2>\n\n\n

Wie soll ich`s sagen, ich hatte keine Ahnung von Tony Cragg und seinen Skulpturen, bis sie eines Tages anfingen mir permanent \u00fcber den Weg zu laufen.
Angefangen hatte es im Museum Reinhard Ernst in Wiesbaden. Dort steht eine aus zwei Teilen bestehende und sechs Meter hohe und 20 Tonnen schwere Bronzeskulptur \u201ePair\u201c von Ihm. Die Skulptur ist so sperrig, dass sie noch bevor die Fenster in den Rohbau des Museums eingesetzt wurden und dann keine M\u00f6glichkeit mehr bestanden h\u00e4tte die Skulptur ins Museum zu bekommen – \u00a0mittels eines Kranes in das Museum hineingehoben wurde und an ihrem im Voraus bestimmten Platz aufgestellt wurde.
Als Taumelland nun – von den organischen Formen und der honiggelben Farbe der Skulptur sehr angetan – anfing zu \u00fcberlegen, ob die Skulptur wohl innen hohl ist, kam ein Angestellter des Museums vorbei und sagte \u2013 man d\u00fcrfe die Skulptur ruhig anfassen. Wow!\u00a0 So kam es buchst\u00e4blich zu Taumellands Erstkontakt mit Tony Cragg und seinen Skulpturen.
Circa sechs Wochen sp\u00e4ter besuchte Taumelland eine Fotoausstellung von Candida H\u00f6fer im Hessischen Landesmuseum Darmstadt.\u00a0 Versteckt in einer Nische, stie\u00dfen Taumelland und seine Begleitung auf eine Skulptur, die stark an die im Museum Reinhard Ernst erinnerte. Und Bingo! auch die war von Tony Cragg nur halt deutlich kleiner.\u00a0 Aber was wir nicht wussten, jetzt sollte es erst so richtig losgehen mit Skulpturen von Tony Cragg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wer ist eigentlich Tony Cragg?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Tony Cragg wurde 1949 in Liverpool geboren und z\u00e4hlt heute zu den bedeutendsten Bildhauern der Gegenwart. Seit 1977 lebt und arbeitet er in Wuppertal.  Hier betreibt und betreut die Tony Cragg Foundation einen 15 Hektar gro\u00dfen Skulpturenpark \u201eWaldfrieden\u201c. Seine Skulpturen haben einen starken Bezug zu geomorphologischen und nat\u00fcrlichen organischen Formen und Strukturen.  So gleichen manche Windh\u00f6ckern oder auch sogenannten „Pilsfelsen“.
 Tony Cragg war bis 2013 Rektor der Kunstakademie D\u00fcsseldorf und wurde 2016 als \u201eKnight Bachelor\u201c in Gro\u00df Britannien zum Ritter geschlagen.

Also um den Faden wieder aufzunehmen: Wenn wir schon mal in Darmstadt sind, so dachten wir, dann lohnt auch ein Besuch einer \u201eWiege der Moderne\u201c, der K\u00fcnstlerkolonie Mathildenh\u00f6he.
 Von dort aus ist es auch nicht weit zur Rosenh\u00f6he, einem Landschaftspark, den wir beide noch nicht kannten und besuchen wollten. Kaum auf der Mathildenh\u00f6he angekommen, ersp\u00e4hten wir eine silbrig gl\u00e4nzende zweiteilige Plastik, von der wir uns fragten, ob die ihrem Aussehen nach, nicht auch von Tony Cragg sein k\u00f6nnte? – und so war es dann auch. Was wir nicht wussten, war, dass in Darmstadt der Skulpturengarten \u201eSpanischer Turm\u201c (ein 2020 er\u00f6ffnetes Zentrum f\u00fcr Bildhauerkunst) gerade auf der Rosenh\u00f6he eine gro\u00dfe Tony Cragg Ausstellung zeigt (26. April \u2013 26. Oktober 2025).

Insgesamt 10 Werke des Bildhauers sind ausgehend von der Mathildenh\u00f6he \u00fcber die Rosenh\u00f6he bis hin zum Skulpturengarten Spanischer Turm zu sehen.
Wir entdeckten dann auf der Mathildenh\u00f6he auch eine provisorische Beschilderung \u201eTony Cragg Weg\u201c und beschlossen ihr zu folgen. So wurden wir zu den entlang des Weges aufgestellten Plastiken durch die Rosenh\u00f6he und schlie\u00dflich zum Spanischen Turm gef\u00fchrt.  
Unterwegs haben wir versucht die Titel der Skulpturen ausgehend von Ihren Formen und Farben zu erraten. So hie\u00df die erste, also die auf der Mathildenh\u00f6he, zum Beispiel \u201ePoints of view\u201c. Das hat zwar viel Spa\u00df gemacht, aber leider konnten wir keine einzigen Treffer landen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ein interessantes Detail ist, dass das der Turm urspr\u00fcnglich im 18 Jahrhundert mal als eingeschossige k\u00fcnstlicher Ruine angelegt worden war und erst im 19. Jahrhundert aufgestockt wurde. Seinen Namen gab Ihm Prinz Carl von Hessen der den Turm als \u201eChateau d\u00b4Espagne\u201c bezeichnete, eine franz\u00f6sische Redewendung die so viel wie unrealistische \u2013 zum Scheitern verurteilte – Pl\u00e4ne haben oder schlichter \u201eLuftschl\u00f6sser\u201c bauen\u201c bedeutet.<\/p>\n
