Wir sind umgeben von Dingen. Dinge sind f\u00fcr unser Dasein essentiell.
Vom kindlichen Stofftier angefangen, \u00fcber das erste eigene Auto, den Ehering, bis hin zu den \u201eletzten Dingen\u201c begleiten sie uns durch unser Leben. Dinge definieren unseren sozialen Status, sind uns eine Freude und eine Selbstverst\u00e4ndlichkeit.
Sie k\u00f6nnen pers\u00f6nliche Unzul\u00e4nglichkeiten ausgleichen und zur Erweiterung unseres Horizontes beitragen.
Dinge werden uns aber auch zur Last, so dass wir uns von Ihnen befreien m\u00fcssen, und \u00fcberhaupt scheinen wir immer viel zu viele Dinge zu besitzen.
Ein durchschnittlicher Deutscher nennt bis zu 10.000 Dinge sein Eigen und in Gro\u00dfbritannien gab es 2013 gesch\u00e4tzt sechs Milliarden Kleidungsst\u00fccke – rund einhundert pro Erwachsenen –  von denen ein Viertel nie getragen worden ist.\u00b9 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dinge \u2013 wir sprechen dann von Artefakten –  sind auch unsere wichtigsten Quellen, wenn wir etwas \u00fcber die Vergangenheit erfahren wollen, denn das Material allen historischen Arbeitens ist das, was im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes \u00fcbrig geblieben ist. Das ist oft erschreckend wenig. So liegen in einem durchschnittlichen deutschen Stadtarchiv gerade mal vier Urkunden f\u00fcr den Zeitraum des gesamten 12. Jahrhunderts.\u00b2
Dinge besitzen im Kontext der Geschichtswissenschaft nicht nur eine Materialit\u00e4t sondern auch eine Medialit\u00e4t. Als Medium\/Quelle soll das historische Material \u2013 eine alte Fotografie zum Beispiel \u2013 die Zeitreise in die Vergangenheit erm\u00f6glichen.  Das ist eine Krux, denn Medien haben nun mal als \u201eMittler\u201c die schlechte Eigenschaft sich zwischen uns und \u201edas Eigentliche\u201c zu schieben.
Sp\u00e4testens an diesem Punkt, lohnt sich die erkenntnistheoretische Frage:
Wer spricht hier eigentlich zu\/mit wem?
Ein Beispiel: wenn wir in einer lauen Sommernacht, vielleicht mit ein paar Freunden, Freundinnen in den Sternenhimmel blicken, dann verfallen wir leicht ins Philosophieren. M\u00f6glicherweise \u00fcber die Zeit, den unendlichen Raum und der Fl\u00fcchtigkeit der eigenen Existenz.  Aber und das vergisst\/\u00fcbersieht man in seiner quasi nat\u00fcrlichen auf sich selbst zentrierten Sichtweise leicht –  nicht nur wir befragen die Sterne, sondern auch die Sterne befragen uns!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
